Isuzu is a force to be reckoned with, especially in Thailand, where the manufacturer has now built its six millionth D-Max pickup.

For more than 57 years, Isuzu Motors Thailand has been building vehicles such as the D-Max and MU-X SUV under licence from the Isuzu Group in Japan. In 1974, the Thai factory started to produce pickups for the local market, with production increasing steadily to supply both domestic and overseas customers in more than 100 countries.

Thailand has established a firm position as the Isuzu Group’s mother plant for pickup trucks, supplying 300,000 to 400,000 Isuzu vehicles annually to regions worldwide.

Facelifted D-Max pickup is the six millionth model.

Currently employing 6,002 people and building 385,000 units annually, the manufacturer is expected to expand its offering in 2025 with a battery-powered D-Max pickup.

“Isuzu is actively taking efforts to realise a carbon-neutral society,” explained Shinsuke Minami, president and COO of Isuzu. “Going forward, Isuzu plans to produce a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) pickup truck in Thailand. Isuzu will first introduce it in Europe and then examine its gradual rollout by meeting the needs of each market, including Thailand. Expectations of Thailand, Isuzu’s largest market for its pickup trucks, will remain steady in the years to come. To continue to contribute to the people of Thailand, I want us to create ‘Transport’ together and for Isuzu to remain a company that captures hearts and endures for eternity.”

Before then, a revised D-Max has been revealed, with production in Thailand — including the six millionth model — already underway. A revamped front and rear design, with a discreet power bulge on the bonnet, are the most obvious external changes, but a modernisation of the cabin and a host of new safety technologies are also part of the update.
