Stellantis Starts Hydrogen Fuel Cell Production for Mid-Size and Large Vans in Europe • Professional Van

Stellantis is expanding its in-house hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle range, with production starting on its medium and large-sized vans.

Facilities in Hordain, France, and Gliwice, Poland, will produce hydrogen-fuelled variants of ten vans for the Stellantis Pro One range of brands, including the Citroen e-Jumpy and e-Jumper (known as the Dispatch and Relay in the UK), Fiat E-Scudo and E-Ducato, Peugeot E-Expert and E-Boxer, and Vauxhall Vivaro and Movano.

The fuel cell versions of the vans build on the technology used in the zero-emission battery-electric variants of the vehicles, with the added advantages of short refuelling times and no sacrifice of payload capability. For the mid-size vans, a second generation of the fuel cell system delivers a segment record range of up to 250 miles and a refuelling time of less than four minutes. For the large vans, adding fuel cell technology brings a range capability of up to 310 miles and a refuelling time of just five minutes.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology plays an important role in Stellantis’ zero-emission roadmap. Launched in 2021, Stellantis is the first manufacturer in the world to market this type of vehicle.

“The action to bring hydrogen fuel cell mid-size vans and add fuel cell large vans to our production lines is a proof point of our commitment to maintain the lead in cutting-edge hydrogen technology and make it available to our most demanding customers,” said Jean-Michel Billig, Stellantis’ chief technology officer for hydrogen fuel cell vehicle development. “The skills and dedication of our engineering and operational teams are essential as we pursue the ambitions of Dare Forward 2030 and maintain the lead in the zero-emission commercial vehicle segment.”

The manufacturer will continue to build pure electric versions of its compact vans — the Citroen e-Berlingo, Fiat E-Doblo, Opel Combo Electric, Peugeot e-Partner and Vauxhall Combo Electric — at its Ellesmere Port facility in the northwest of England.
