The VW Amarok V6 engine is the most powerful engine in the UK pickup truck market, producing up to 255bhp and 580Nm. Introduced in response to criticism that the previous 2.0-litre twin turbo models were underpowered in 2016, V6 Amaroks are renowned for their performance and finesse.
However, there is a choice of three power ratings so which one is the best for you and your business?
VW Amarok V6 technical information
The 3.0-litre (2,970cc) V6 ‘CR’ engine was originally developed by Audi and first installed into the Audi 8 in 2004. The engine has since been used in other Audi models, like the Q7, Volkswagen passenger cars and even for marine applications, and was finally introduced into the Amarok in 2016.
The engine is composed of a compacted vermicular graphite cast iron with six UV laser-honed exposed bores at 90-degree angles measuring 83.0 by 91.4mm. Each cylinder can hold just under half a litre (495cc), there is a compression ratio of 17:1 and there are four valves per cylinder (24 in total).
VW Amarok V6 engine performance
As stated, there are now three power ratings available with the Volkswagen Amarok V6 engine:
- Produces up to 161bhp (2,750 to 4,500rpm) and 450Nm (1,250 to 2,500rpm)
- Produces up to 201bhp (3,000 to 4,500rpm) and 500Nm (1,250 to 2,750rpm)
- Produces up to 254bhp (3,250 to 4,000rpm) and 580Nm (1,400 to 3,000rpm)
The 258PS output replaced a 221bhp/550Nm rating in September 2018, in response to Mercedes-Benz introducing a 255PS (251bhp/550Nm) power rating on the X-Class. This means the Amarok retains the best 0-62mph sprint time of 7.4 seconds and the highest maximum speed of 129mph.
VW Amarok V6 mpg
As you might expect, the Volkswagen Amarok V6 engine isn’t the most economical. Combined NEDC cycle figures vary between 32.5mpg (163PS manual) and 34.9mpg (204PS automatic). The automatic transmission and 204PS outputs are the more fuel efficient.
