A recent study by Peugeot has revealed that green environmental concerns are the primary factor driving commercial van users to switch to electric vehicles. According to the research, 76% of van drivers cited ecological benefits as their key motivation for going electric, outranking cost savings, which were historically expected to be the main factor.

Peugeot found that alongside the environmental advantages, driving pleasure (63%) and energy prices (60%) were also significant motivators. The study sheds light on the evolving mindset of UK van drivers, many of whom are increasingly embracing green mobility.

Interestingly, while van drivers prioritise environmental impact, car drivers seem less motivated by sustainability. Only 55% of car drivers reported environmental concerns as their main reason for switching to electric or hybrid vehicles, highlighting a notable gap between the two groups.

Beyond the workplace, van drivers are demonstrating a broader commitment to sustainability in their everyday lives. The study revealed that 36% of van drivers regularly cycle, significantly higher than the 12% of car drivers who do the same. Additionally, 76% of van drivers walk for local journeys, compared to 64% of car drivers. Nearly half (47%) of van drivers said they actively seek alternative modes of transport to reduce their carbon footprint.

In terms of sustainable living, van drivers once again lead the way. More than three-quarters (78%) reported that environmental concerns influence their daily habits. They are also more likely to adopt eco-conscious practices such as using reusable coffee cups (57% vs. 37% of car drivers) and reducing plastic waste by using metal straws and eco-friendly alternatives to cling film.

Contrary to outdated stereotypes, van drivers are among the most environmentally aware motorists on the road. Many are adopting eco-friendly driving habits, such as turning off engines when stationary, reducing excess weight in their vehicles, and maintaining fuel efficiency through regular servicing.

“Contrary to what many may believe, our research shows van drivers are among the most eco-conscious members of society,” commented Eurig Druce, managing director of Peugeot UK. “Whether it’s adopting eco-friendly driving habits, ditching single-use plastics or choosing an all-electric van, it’s clear that sustainability is at the forefront of van drivers’ choices. Peugeot offers the widest electric vehicle line-up of any mainstream European manufacturer, including an all-electric version of every model in our van range, thus helping more van drivers achieve their sustainability goals.”
