The beloved Jimny will continue to be sold in the UK, but Suzuki is turning it into a two-seater lightweight and off-road capable LCV.
The light commercial version of the Jimny sees the rear seats replaced with a plastic-lined load bay, the cargo area separated from the cabin by a full-height metal mesh bulkhead. The result is an 863-litre load capacity, which is 33 litres more than the outgoing passenger version with its seats folded down. The change also means the Jimny van will benefit from a fully flat floor.

None of the Jimny’s off-road credentials will be lost in the change to a light commercial vehicle, with the diminutive Suzuki featuring the same uncompromising off-roading performance as the passenger vehicle model. Key features include the ladder frame chassis, 3-link rigid axle suspension and Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro system – a part-time 4WD system with low range transfer gear.
Safety gear remains present, too, with emergency automatic braking, hill hold and hill descent control, and eCall, an emergency messaging function in case of a collision.
Power will be provided by the same 100hp, 15.-litre engine that sits under the Jimny’s bonnet now. A Suzuki spokesperson told Professional Pickup & 4×4 that the popular 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine won’t be offered as an option, despite the extra power and improved economy, as it doesn’t suit the demands of Jimny users.
While the passenger car version of the Jimny has been offered in only limited numbers thanks to its high emission levels, the commercial version will be measured against the less stringent LCV regulations. This allows for average CO2 emissions of a 147g/km before punitive fines come into play, significantly more manageable than the passenger car target of 95g/km, and helpfully aiding Suzuki’s financial exposure.
Prices and availability of the Suzuki Jimny LCV have yet to be announced.
