Head down to the shops and you might just be able to pop a new Ford Ranger into your basket. If that sounds unlikely then you’ll be surprised to find the Armoured Cavalry Special Edition pickup truck is available exclusively at Costco, although only if you’re in Taiwan.
Ford and Costco have worked together in Taiwan since 2015, providing a convenient way for buyers to get into Ford products. This Ranger special edition is the latest highlight available to the wholesaler’s members in the island territory.
Just 40 of the Armoured Cavalry Special Edition pickups will be available, each based around the Ford Ranger extended cab. Each has several upgrades to appeal to Taiwanese users, including a water tank shield, a body-coloured grille, and bold 4×4 stickers on the side. Buyers also get to choose from five colours; Thunder Blue, Polar White, Star Silver, Hardcore Grey and Absolute Black.
Inside you’ll find an 8.0-inch infotainment centre, with Ford’s Sync 2 software and both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay present. Localised navigation is also included, as are the features that come as part of the Co-Pilot360 package. These include essential safety equipment, such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and assist, and a reversing camera with a zoom function.
The Armoured Cavalry model is otherwise a standard Ranger, powered by the same 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine as we get in the UK, developing a healthy 170hp and 420Nm of torque, and mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Part-time four-wheel-drive makes for easy motorway mileage and capable off-road behaviour, with a low range mode available for tougher stuff.
The extended cab also provides for a slightly longer load bay than the usual double cab models, with a maximum load length of 1,847mm. Payload capacity is stated as 1,135kg, with the special edition model’s cabin-protection frame and six lashing points offering plenty of places to tie down a load.
