Keeping a vehicle battery healthy is one of those small maintenance jobs that can prevent a much bigger problem later. For van operators, a flat battery is more than an inconvenience; it can mean missed jobs, delayed starts, recovery costs and unnecessary downtime.

What is the CTEK CS One Gen 2?
The CS One Gen 2 is a mains-powered smart battery charger designed to automatically detect the battery type, size and condition before applying the appropriate charging programme.
Unlike more traditional chargers, there are no modes to select and no buttons to press. You simply connect the charger to the battery, plug it into the mains, and let the unit work out what the battery needs.
That makes it particularly useful where the person connecting the charger might not be a technician. There’s less chance of choosing the wrong mode, and the charger is designed to make the process as straightforward as possible.
It also doesn’t matter which way around the clamps are connected, removing another common worry for less experienced users.
What’s new for Gen 2?
The key addition for the second-generation CS One is app control. The charger can connect to a smartphone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing users to check charging status remotely, view charging history, receive notifications and access additional functions.
For some users, that will sound like an unnecessary complication. In practice, it can be genuinely useful.
If a van is parked in a yard, workshop, garage or compound, being able to check charging progress without physically returning to the vehicle saves time. It also makes it easier to keep track of batteries across vehicles that are not used every day.
The app also unlocks extra features, including a reconditioning cycle for tired batteries, a wake-up function for deeply discharged batteries, and a supply mode that provides stable power while work is being carried out on the vehicle.
Where does it make sense?
The CS One Gen 2 is unlikely to be a must-have for every van operator. If a vehicle is used daily, has a healthy battery and rarely sits idle, a charger like this may only be needed occasionally.
However, it starts to make more sense for campervan conversions, demonstrators, seasonal work vehicles, backup vans, show vehicles, trailers with electrical systems, or commercial vehicles fitted with additional equipment.
It could also be useful for small fleets where vehicles are rotated in and out of use, or for tradespeople who have a second van or car that doesn’t get driven every day.
Cold weather is another factor. Batteries are put under more strain in winter, and vehicles that are left standing for a few weeks are more likely to struggle when they are needed again.
Is the app useful for commercial users?
The app isn’t essential, but it does add convenience. For a single vehicle parked on a driveway, checking the charger manually isn’t a hardship. But in a busy yard or workshop environment, remote monitoring holds more appeal.
The diagnostics are also useful. They won’t replace proper workshop testing, but they can help users spot a battery that’s struggling before it becomes a roadside problem.
The price problem
There’s no getting away from the fact that the CTEK CS One Gen 2 is expensive.
The charger is priced at £260, although at the time of writing it’s listed at £200 on Amazon
and in-store at SportsBikeShop. Either way, that is a significant amount of money for a battery charger.
There are cheaper chargers available, and for occasional use, many of them will do the job perfectly well. If you only need to top up a battery once every few years, the CS One Gen 2 is probably more charger than you need.
But downtime has a cost. If a charger prevents a non-start or saves a recovery callout, the price becomes easier to justify.
CTEK CS One Gen 2: The verdict
The CTEK CS One Gen 2 is not the cheapest way to charge a vehicle battery, and it will be overkill for some operators.
However, it’s a very easy charger to use, with enough smart features to make it more than just another box in the workshop. The automatic setup removes much of the guesswork, while the app control, charging history and diagnostics add useful visibility for vehicles that spend time parked up.
For daily-use vans, it’s probably a luxury. But if battery maintenance is something you only think about when a vehicle refuses to start, the CS One Gen 2 is a neat way of making sure that moment is less likely to happen.
